BROWNS BAG - SOUL SATISFIED

Before I start this review, I must admit to being a BIG fan of Browns Bag and am also privileged to be a friend to Ward and Sherrod however that said, like anyone who lives for the love of Soulful music, I know what I do and dont like but as the first album is the benchmark, then the guys have got to go some to surpass 'Labor of Love'

On the album sleevenotes for 'Soul Satisfied' Ward Browns writes 'This album is a thankyou to Artists, Songwriters and Producers, such as Gladys Knight,Teddy P, Frankie Beverly, Curtis Mayfield, McFadden and Whitehead, Gamble and Huff and other artistes of the 70's.  He also says that a song should make you smile, make you love, make you cry, make you laugh and most of all make you remember. The message is clear to me ...Browns Bag is about SOUL music.......Thank goodness they are back !!

Ever since Browns Bag sprang out of the speakers with the 'Labor of love' album, I have found myself on an emotional rollercoaster waiting for the new album. 'Heaven' is without doubt one of my all time favourite songs and nothing will come close...or so I thought:

The opening track, 'You touch my heart 'is in my opinion one of the most compelling songs you will here for a long time. The last song to have that kind of effect on me when first played was Sam Dees 'after all'.  A lilting sublime melody, enscapulated in a warm soulful rhythm, wrapped up with Wards warm vocals, this is SOUL music. Uncomplicated, the song has a real 70's vibe to it, a real arrangement that allows the message to permeate through to the listener.
'You love me' is a real deal stepper, that moves gently in and out, allowing Ward and Sherrod to do what comes naturally, Sing !!.

'Me Around' appears to take many of the influences from the 70's that Ward touched on in the notes. A pot pourri of funky soul, touches of the jazz funk influence and I am sure that I could detect homage to the philly sound. The dominance of the horns made this an instant winner with me as I'm as sucker for the sax.

More than friends, stay and cant let go epitomise what Browns Bag have in abundance, a real desire to stay true to the Soulful influences . These songs were the bedrock of 'Labor of love' and thankfully remain so on this album. Emotional, warm, sensative and carefully thought out lyrics that take the listener on an emotional voyage . Anyone who knows Ward Brown will understand what he is trying to say, because this guy genuinely believes in what he sings. He understands deeply what makes a good song great, and his rich voice squeezes every drop of emotion from the lyrics.
'Rain' could almost be a Stylistics track, whilst at the same time ensuring the listener that this is definately Browns Bag. Once Sherrod has caught the attention with his wonderful falsetto vocals, Ward steps in and adds the final polish. The production is full and accomplished allowing the musicians to generate that 70's feel by the bucket load. 'Open your Soul' carries on in the same vein, but moves up a level. Raw vocal energy with a very familiar sounding sax, this is a song which has an edgier feel to it and does credit to the funkier aspects of Wards style  .

I am a great believer that the real test of an album is not only whether it is capable of taking the listener through different emotions, but ensuring that you would want to come back and explore it more. I love to revisit albums because there are always the obvious stand out tracks, that emerge upon the initial play, but these do in time drift in to the background allowing the hidden gems to emerge. Browns Bag has that ability to do that and subsequently I find my favourite tracks changing constantly. Toss n' turn  is one of those gems. With an almost atmospheric feel it takes you in from the beginning. A song that build steadily, grabbing your attention, until you cannot help moving and humming along with. I feel this track really showcases the talents of Browns Bag, with a great production, wonderful backing musicians and once again the vocal harmonies pushing it to another level. I love this track and cannot stop singing along with it ...now thats the mark of a good tune !!!

As a fan of 'No more love'  I was surprised to see it lifted from 'Labor of Love' and given a Diskonauts Remix.  Not sure initially !! but have to admit it has grown on me. My trouble is that I always have difficulty in understanding remixes. Likewise 'Things you say' has been treated to the Markydisko Jazzy Remix

I didnt really want to compare this album to 'Labor of love', but it was bound to happen however,'Soul Satisfied'  is only the next chapter in the remarkable rise of Browns Bag. Staying true to the 70's Soul tradition, it is easy to hear all of the influences in both style and delivery and I am sure that we are going to be hearing a lot more from the guys in the future. Browns Bag are back and here to stay.
So !! now that youve got two albums under your belt Ward...When is the UK tour ?

Soul Satisfied is released in the UK on soulchoonz Records. Available through all good dealers of Soulful Music(See links) or go to www.soulchoonz.com

THIS WEEKS TOP PICKS

A lot of stuff arrived this week, a real mixture of stuff from Soulful house, dancefloor jazz, and some modern & crossover magic ...so here goes !!

Andre Orefjard - Cookin - feat  May Yamani.   Nu Sound Soulful jazzy tinged tune that has a real euro feel to it (Artist gave that one away I think ). Clean vocal sounding a bit like the lady from Leeds (CBR)on occasions. It has a nice summery feel and will probably be dropped in to the show in the mellow section ..nice

Megablast - Over. I love this !! a nice latin jazzy vibe with a great vocal that swoops around the rhythm like leaves dancing on the breeze. Doesnt grab your attention immediately but when you finally get sucked in, you just cant stop playing it ...Fresh

The Odd Couple -Sunshine. Midtempo Shuffling jazzy instrumental that took me hostage from the opening bars...Stockholm syndrome kicked in and now Im completely absorbed by this wicked tune. Send in the Jazz police if you will , I aint coming out ....this is awesome

Lee McDonald - We've only just begun. As a fan of quality Soul Music and the constant search for holy grail tunes, ardent rare soul afficiendos will recognise the quality that is Lee McDonalds wonderful album 'SWEET MAGIC'. Welll guess what ? whilst youve been rummaging through piles of old records at boot fairs and charity shops looking for the original album(NB: Soul Brother Reissue available) a new mix of the classic track we've only just begun was being created. I wrote to the masters of this creation some time back and have been trying to get a copy for ages and finally I managed to get a copy. Mixed by Roger Nicholls and Paul Williams, for me the TM Juke remix is the one worth hunting down. A funky affair that instantly demands you turn up the volume, I love this so much, because It strays a long way from the original but at the same time reatins some of the qualities that made this tune so precious.....Listen in next week this will definately get it

Esther Phillips - Nobody but you - Roullette Demo

Got to be honest, I have not heard this for yonks and had not give it a second thought, until  a colleague played it for me one evening. Wow I thought , what is that ? I recognised the voice immediately but was stuck on the title of the track. If you dont know this track, find some one who has it and ask them to play it for you !! this is magic. A Mid tempo crossover monster that has all the qualities expected of an Esther Phillips song. Written by G Sims & F Smith, this swayer has CHICAGO written all over it . Produced by the Dance Master Mr Willie Henderson, this song retains tight vocals, a wicked sax break and sublime strings. Combine all of this with a full production and guess what youve got  a monster ready for revival !!Bet their are loads of Soulies out there that know and love this track, well Ive just joined the ones in the know !!!
